Coupy, Seb

After studying at the Arts-Décoratifs in Geneva and the Beaux-Arts in Lyon, Seb Coupy, accompanied by JM Touzin, set off to meet the people who work at the pump and made “Entretiens courants de la station” (Les films de l'Astrophore). Several of his subsequent films show an interest in maps (“Cartographie”) and territories (“C'est pas arrosé avec l'eau du ciel”). In 2005, he examined the action of pressing a key with “Le petit geste”. In 2014, he won the SCAM discovery prize for “LUX”, a film co-written with Bertrand Larrieu about the way night is perceived in Burkina-Faso. With “L'image qu'on s'en fait”, made in 2019, he confronts the notion of national identity with the large brown tourist signs on the French motorway network. His work is oriented towards a form of wild semiology collected here and there.
